Staff Backend Engineer, Plans Squad (f/m/x)

About the role: What's in the Box

The service provider will join the Consumer Mega Alliance, Consumer Core Tribe as a member of the Plans squad. As a Staff Backend Engineer, you’ll play a defining and strategic role in shaping the backbone of the mission-critical Customer Plans Domain which is currently undergoing a strategic evolution, ensuring reliability and consistency for millions of users.
The focus is not just on maintenance, but on re-architecting how millions of customers interact with the product. Tasks include providing technical leadership, fostering engineering excellence, and collaborating with senior stakeholders to align technical strategy with business objectives.

What you’ll do: The Recipe

• Work on the architecture, design, and technical strategy for complex microservices systems, establishing patterns and best practices across multiple teams.
• Drive technical decision-making and architectural reviews, ensuring scalability, reliability, and maintainability of Plans domain. Your responsibilities will include conducting analysis, documenting detailed specifications, and ensuring that all defined requirements are traceable, verifiable, and align with the overall strategic goals and technical architecture.
• Lead critical technical initiatives and cross-team projects, collaborating with technical leadership and cross-functional partners to align technical strategy with business objectives.
• Drive the adoption of AI-powered tools and methodologies within the team to significantly accelerate development cycles and enhance output quality and efficiency. Mentor engineers, fostering a culture of precision, operational excellence thinking, and high-quality engineering in a high-paced environment.

What you’ll bring: The Ingredients

• 8+ years of backend engineering experience with deep expertise in microservices and distributed event-driven architectural patterns
• Expert-level proficiency in Go or JVM languages
• Proven track record in taking architectural decisions about the development and maintenance of large-scale distributed systems and integrations with applications and user interfaces
• Advanced experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud-native architectures, including production operations at scale
• Extensive experience building event-driven architectures using message bus technologies (Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS/SNS, etc.)
• Deep expertise with database technologies (relational and NoSQL), including performance optimization, schema design, and operational best practices
• Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and drive technical standards across teams
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with experience working with senior stakeholders and distributed teams
• Meaningful experience using AI coding agents (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) as part of your regular workflow
• Familiarity with e-commerce, subscription-based business models, and GraphQL integration is considered a significant advantage
